Immanuel Kant was a German philosopher of the Enlightenment period. His work sought to reconcile independent reason, free will and moral values. Kant was influenced by the work of David Hume, and he in turn, influenced Friedrich Hegel.

1740: Enrolls at the University of Konigsburg to study mathematics and physics.
1781: Publishes Critique of Pure Reason.
1755: Begins lecturing at the University of Konigsberg.
1792: King Frederick William II bans him from lecturing or writing on religion.
1793: Publishes Religion Within the Limits of Reason Alone.
1797: Retires from the university, and publishes Groundwork of the Metaphysic of Morals.
1804: Dies in Konigsberg on February 12.
