Ike Turner was an American bandleader, producer, talent scout, and musician most active in the 1950s and 1960s, especially with Tina Turner.
A Troubled Legend
Ike Turner, under the pseudonym Jackie Brenston, wrote and recorded what music historians consider to be the first rock and roll record, Rocket 88 in 1951, a largely unsung but hugely influential distinction that, coupled with his discovery of pop music icon Tina Turner, is sullied by Turner's long history of philandering, misogyny, and substance abuse. Obviously conflicted, Turner dedicated time in his later years to the anti-drug Blues Schools Program but died of complications from a cocaine overdose.
