If Only For One Night Chikezie

American Idol contestant Chikezie Eze performed the Luther Vandross song "If Only For One Night" on the March 25, 2008 episode of the show. He was accompanied by three back up singers.

The performance was preceded by a video segment about Chikezie's upbringing in a Nigerian family.

1. Randy: Felt it was old school and boring. He did not like it.
2. Paula: Thought he did a great job. Enjoyed the texture of his vocals.
3. Simon: Believed he sang well, but the performance was cheesy.

He's fine at this sort of thing, but he's not Luther (or even Ruben, probably), and when he can do such interesting upbeat arrangements, this kind of thing is a relative letdown. Randy thinks it was old-school and unhip. Paula disagrees as Simon snickers at her. She thinks it was amazing. Simon thinks he sang well but that it was cheesy and unoriginal.
