An Improvised Explosive Device (IED) is a bomb that is created or deployed with the use of non-conventional military means. Often employed during terror attacks or guerrilla warfare, IEDs can be made with minimal technical knowledge.
Military/Terror Applications
IEDs are widely used in the Iraq War. They are also utilized extensively by the rebel group The Tamil Tigers in Sri Lanka. The IRA is notorious for employing Vehicle Born Improvised Explosive Device (VBIEDs), also known as "Carbombs."
