Idriss Deby, or Idriss Deby Itno, is the current president of Chad. He is often criticized for changes he made to Chad's constitution granting him extended rule, and the fortune he has made through oil development deals. In 2005 a rebellion broke out on Chad's eastern border, now known as the Chad War, and has since threatened Deby's rule continuously. He has blamed Sudan and President Omar al-Bashir for supporting the rebels. On February 2, 2008, a rebel insurgency took control of N'Djamena, the capital of Chad. They were fought back and on February 6, 2008, Deby claimed to have finally defeated the rebels.
