What Is IDE?
IDE is one of two ways to connect a drive to your motherboard. The other way is with a SATA connection.
IDE is an older style of connection. Depending on your motherboard, you can have one to four IDE connections. Most motherboards have more SATA connections, usually around six.
The IDE connection end has a single pinhole that's filled in. This is so it will fit into the slot in a particular way. If you're trying to insert your IDE plug and it won't go in, you're probably fitting it in the wrong way.
IDE Versus SATA Connection
IDE and SATA are two ways to connect drives, such as DVD or hard drives, to your motherboard.
An IDE can connect up to two devices to the motherboard. You can connect a secondary line from a primary device and connect both to the motherboard. SATA connections can only have one device per connection.
