Ian Fleming was a British author and journalist. At one time he was also a World War II Navy Commander. He was born on May 28, 1908. Fleming created the internationally popular character James Bond. He chronicled Bond's adventures through the course of 12 novels and nine short stories. Fleming also wrote the children's story, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang.
Fleming also wrote two non-fiction books in the course of his career: The Diamond Smugglers and Thrilling Cities.
In 1953 Fleming published his first Bond book called Casino Royale. At first his book did not reach bestseller status in the United States but that changed with then President John F. Kennedy included the book From Russia With Love in his favorite books list. Sales quickly skyrocketed.
Ian Fleming died at the age of 56 of a heart attack on August 12, 1964. He was buried at Sevenhampton Village and later once his wife and son passed away they were buried next to him.
On April 11, 2008 a series of letters exchanged between Fleming and Jean Frampton were sold to a private collector for a sum of over $28,000. The Associated Press labeled Jean Frampton as Ian Fleming's real-life Miss Moneypenny.
To mark what would have been Ian Fleming's 100th birthday Ian Fleming Publications commissioned Sebastian Faulks to write a new James Bond book called Devil May Care. It is slated to be released in May of 2008. It will be credit as "Sebastian Faulks, writing as Ian Fleming.
