Plot Synopsis
I Know Why The Caged Bird Sings chronicled Maya Angelou's early years living in the southern United States. She raised herself and her brother. With little support system, the family was vulnerable to danger. Angelou ultimately dealt with the return of her alcoholic father, a brutal rape, and an unplanned pregnancy. By the end of the novel Angelou barely graduated from high school before the birth of her son.Critical Reception
While a critical and financial success (and a pick of Oprah's Book Club), due to the often graphic nature of I Know Why The Caged Bird Sings the book has a history of being banned from schools.
