I Am Legend is a 1954 American novel written by Richard Matheson.

Influential on the zombie and vampire genre since its release, I Am Legend depicts the story of one man left alone in a world full of virus-infected vampires who are sluggish by day and vicious by night.

Set in Los Angeles from 1976 to 1979, the protagonist, Robert Neville, spends his days protecting his house from nighttime attacks. While lamenting over the loss of his family and friends to the pandemic, he eventually realizes that like how vampires were legend at one time, he is now legend, being one of the few humans left.
