Will Smith and filmmakers Akiva Goldsman, James Lassiter and Francis Lawrence are developing the plot for what is said to be a prequel to the sci-fi thriller I Am Legend. Warner Bros. has approached D.B. Weiss to pen the script.

The film is to capture the events leading up to the decimation of mankind due to the ravages of a man-made virus. Will Smith plays the role of Dr. Robert Neville, a scientist who manages to survive the plague, only to be pitted against the mutant zombies the virus has created.Variety: WB Plans...Prequel (September 24, 2008)

The ending of the theatrical release of I Am Legend deviated from the final pages of the book from which it was adapted. An alternate ending that remains truer to the original storyline has appeared on the Internet, in which Neville and his new family escape New York City together.
