The energy company Hyperion Power Generation plans to produce hot-tub-sized nuclear power sources for commercial use. One Hyperion Power Module (HPG) could power 20,000 homes for up to 10 years. According to the company, the design of the reactors eliminates any possibility of nuclear meltdown. Reactors would be built with a tamper-proof design, buried underground and guarded to further ensure safety. The first reactors will be available for purchase around 2015 at a cost of approximately $25 million.FOX News: Portable Nuclear 'Hot Tubs' Could Power America (November 10, 2008)Hyperion hopes to build 100 reactors in the first year, eventually building up to 400 reactors a year.Next Big Future: Update on Hyperion Power Generation mini-nuclear reactor (November 9, 2008)
The reactors use a liquid metal power source that is self-regulating. The design is similar to the Triga reactor used for research in schools and hospitals. The Hyperion would primarily be used for larger-scale commercial uses, such as to power towns or large factories. The technology could also be adaptable to power spacecrafts or probes for long-range space missions or missions lasting several years.Next Big Future: Update on Hyperion Power Generation mini-nuclear reactor (November 9, 2008)
