Husker Du was an American post-punk band fronted by singer-songwriters Bob Mould and Grant Hart. Considered a core band of the rock underground of the mid-1980s, Hüsker Dü has been credited with bridging the gap between hardcore and alternative rock.
Key Albums
Land Speed Record, 1982—The band's debut was a furious live album whose pace was apt for its title. It contained little or no hint of the band's later penchant for melody, though Mould's guitar work seemed already to have absorbed the droning atmosphere of Boston's Mission of Burma, vaulting Hüsker Dü well ahead of most other hardcore bands.
Zen Arcade, 1984—While sometimes called the first hardcore punk "concept album," Zen Arcade was more notable for its bright melodies and dark introspection, neither of which had previously been part of the hardcore palette. Zen Arcade was arguably the birth of Emo.
New Day Rising, 1985—More diverse than any of the bands previous work, New Day Rising knitted together near-metallic workouts with ballads and even 1960s folk-rock. The frontmen began to diverge on New Day Rising, with Hart's playfulness complimenting Mould's stately melodies and aching lyrics.
