Hurricane Danielle

Hurricane Danielle will be the name of the fourth tropical cyclone of the 2010 hurricane season. The storm will be named Tropical Storm Danielle when its maximum sustained winds reach 39 mph. The name will change to Hurricane Danielle when the maximum sustained winds reach 75 mph. http://www.nhc.noaa.gov/aboutgloss.shtml

The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) designates names for tropical cyclones worldwide. http://www.wisegeek.com/how-are-hurricanes-named.htm The WMO uses six rotating lists of male and female names for the Atlantic basin. Because Danielle is on the 2010 list, the name will not be used again until 2016 unless the name is retired by the WMO in 2010. Names are retired for at least ten years when a hurricane is particularly deadly or damaging.

Government, commercial, and amateur forecasters have all predicted a very busy hurricane season in 2010. http://hurricane.atmos.colostate.edu/forecasts//ref. The forecasts call for up to 21 named storms.<ref>http://www.accuweather.com/blogs/news/story/33013/bastardi-ups-hurricane-season.asp Thus, it is virtually certain that a storm named Danielle will form during the 2010 season. The named storms preceding Danielle will be Alex, Bonnie, and Colin. The named storm following Danielle will be Earl.

Previous Years

Danielle was one of the names chosen when the six rotating lists with male and female names were adopted in 1979. The first use of the name was for Tropical Storm Danielle in 1980. The name was also for hurricanes in 1998 and 2004, and for tropical storms in 1986 and 1992. All hurricane names from 1953 through 1978 were female, but the name Danielle was never used during that period.
