Hunter S. Thompson

Hunter S. Thompson was a well known 20th century journalist most famous for founding Gonzo Journalism and his book Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas which was adapted to film in 1998. He began calling himself Dr. Thompson after purchasing a doctorate in Theology from a church by mail order. He was 67 when he died.

Thompson wrote over fifteen books as well as contributing to Rolling Stone Magazine, ESPN, Esquire, The New York Times, Playboy, San Francisco Examiner, TIME, and Vanity Fair.

Gonzo Journalism

Hunter S. Thompson is credited with being the creator of Gonzo Journalism, a form of journalism where the reporter includes him or herself into the story. The term Gonzo was first used in 1970 by Bill Cardoso, and editor at the Boston Globe

Thompson in Film

A documentary, Gonzo: The Life and Times of Hunter S. Thompson, is due in theaters, July 4, 2008. Written and directed by Alex Gibney of Enron: The Smartest Guys in the Room, the film has been reviewed by Variety as "the definitive docu treatment" of Thompson's life.Variety.com: 'Gonzo: The Life and Work...' film review Previous film portrayals have included 1998's Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas—starring Johnny Depp as Thompson—and 1980's Where the Buffalo Roam, in which Bill Murray plays the writer.
