The Hunt for Gollum is a 40-minute fantasy movie written and produced by Chris Bouchard. The movie is based on the books by J.R.R. Tolkien, and is set in fictional Middle Earth. Its story revolves around Aragorn (played by Adrian Webster), who is dispatched by Gandalf (Patrick O'Connor) on a quest to find Gollum. The movie is set during the events of The Fellowship of the Ring.
The movie is a non-profit production, and was entirely shot on a budget of £3,000 (less than 5,000 USD), on location on Epping Forest, in the United Kingdom, using a cast of 160 volunteers.http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1323925/. Even though the production is unofficial and unauthorized, Chris Bouchard stated he "reached an understanding" with Tolkien Enterprises in 2009.
The movie was released on May 3, 2009, at the Sci-Fi-London festival, and was released on YouTube a week later. Within a month, the movie was viewed over 2 million times, and views totalled over 3.2 million after three months, making it the "fourth most watched film in the USA in early May".
