Humphrey Bogart

  • Humphrey Bogart is a classic actor who has appeared in such films as Casablanca, The African Queen, and Sabrina.
  • Career

After attending and either being kicked out or removed from preparatory school (the cause is not quite certain), at the age of 18 Bogart enlisted in the U.S. Navy. After leaving the Navy he worked several odd jobs, which gave him a chance to try screen writing, production, and directing. Finally in 1921 he made his stage debut as an actor. He went on to appear in well over a dozen Broadway productions between then and 1935. In 1936 he made his film debut in The Petrified Forrest. With a career spanning another two decades before his untimely death, Bogart was awarded one Oscar and nominated for two others.
  • Controversy

Bogart entered into the McCarthy communist-era controversy when he formed the Committee for the First Amendment, to fight what he saw as the harassment of Hollywood stars. The creation of this committee in 1948 and his participation garnered some negative publicity which he would have to distance himself from afterwards.
