Buying Guide
Factors to consider when buying a hummingbird feeder include: pest resistance, rain protection, perches and color.Ants and bees love to feed from hummingbird feeders. It is better to avoid feeding them if only to limit their population in the backyard. To prevent ants from using the hummingbird feeder look for a feeder with ant moats or purchase add-on ant moats. To prevent bees from feeding look for feeders that have no yellow coloring, which attracts bees, and a bee resistant shape, usually written on the packaging.
Rain may dilute and contaminate the contents. Some feeders are designed to minimize rain contamination. There are also rain guards available for purchase.
Hummingbirds love the color red the more red the better but even a little red will attract hummingbirds. Avoid the color yellow to prevent attracting bees. If your feeder is not very red many hummingbird solutions are dyed red. Consider getting perches on your feeder so that the hummingbird can rest while it feeds.
