The Humanitarian Bowl, which aired live on ESPN, took place at Bronco Stadium, home of the Boise State Broncos in Boise, Idaho.

The Bowling Green Falcons finished the 2009 season third in the MAC East Division with a 7-5 record, 6-2 in the conference. They won their first game of the year, then dropped four in a row, falling to Missouri, Marshall, Boise State and Ohio. The Idaho Vandals tallied an even 4-4 record in the WAC, going 7-5 overall.
