Hugo Reyes, commonly know as Hurley, is a character on the ABC series Lost played by Jorge Garcia. Hurley. serves as the show’s comic relief most of the time, but some episodes show a more serious side of him.
Before the Crash When Hurley was ten his father took off and did not come back for almost seventeen years. As a way of dealing with his father's absence, Hurley turned to food. Later on in life, he was involved in an accident in which two people died. He stepped onto a deck, which was designed to only hold eight people and was holding twenty three, and it collapsed. He felt such guilt that he went into depression, doing nothing but eating. His mother was worried about him, so she sent him to mental asylum. It was there that he met Leonard Sims, a fellow patient who repeatedly mumbled the numbers which have been increasing in importance: 4 8 15 16 23 42. Hugo also made a friend named Dave and they would often stir up trouble when the doctors weren’t looking. Later Hurley learned that Dave was a figment of his imagination. Within time Hurley recovered and was released. He then decided to play the lottery and use the mysterious numbers. He was surprised when he won, but began to believe the numbers were evil when he experienced constant cases of bad luck. His Grandfather died while on live television; his sister in-law left his brother for a waitress; at the funeral for his grandfather the priest was struck by lightning; His best friend ran off with his girl friend. When Hurley bought his mother a house it caught of fire, he was then mistaken for a drug dealer, and the fast food restaurant he bought was hit by a meteorite. His suspicion that the numbers were cursed caused him to visit the metal institution again to speak with Leonard. He told Hurley that a man in Australia could explain the mystery of the numbers to him, a man named Sam Toomey. In Australia, he tried to visit Sam Toomey but only found his wife there. She revealed that Sam killed himself in an effort to escape his constant bad luck. While on the plane back home, he encountered more bad luck when the plane crashed, Something he thinks might be another unfortunate result of his curse.
On the Island When on the Island Hurley is more often then not the lighthearted one, who helps the other survivors keep their spirits up as well. He also tends to serve as the voice of reason, as he uses common sense to solve problems. We also made quick friends with fellow survivor Charlie Pace, and the two were nearly inseparable. With in time though, he realized that he was incapable of escaping the numbers after he saw them on the side of the Hatch, and he felt that opening it was a terrible idea. He struggled with his job of dividing up the food that was found in the Hatch, and seeing his old imaginary friend Dave on the Island. He was heartbroken when his romance with a Tail-end Survivor, Libby, was brought to a sudden end when Michael shot her. Immediately after that Michael betrayed Hurley, Kate, Jack and Sawyer by leading into a trap set up by the Others. But he was quickly released and told to go back and warn the rest of the survivors not to come looking for them. Later Hurley helped lift spirits when he found an old DHARMA Van and, with the help of Charlie, Jin and Sawyer, got it started. But that was short-lived, Charlie died in an effort to help the other survivors, and Hurley was again in mourning. After that Jack called the freighter for rescue, and Hurley along with the rest of The Oceanic Six managed to leave the Island, sadly though they could not go back to get the rest of the Survivors because Ben moved the Island.
Back Home Although Hurley tried very hard to live happily, he started seeing visions of Charlie. He was then sent back to the Mental Institute and talked to “Charlie” and other deceased people. Sayid took him from the Mental Institute and brought him to a safe house, where Hurley was mistaken for a murderer and arrested,. He was found innocent and released from prison. Jacob then convinced Hurley to go back to the Island. So he boarded a plane, which again crashed on the Island
Back to the Island When Hurley awoke from the crash he soon realized he had been transported to 1977, for a short time he worked for the DHARMA Initiative as a chef. After Juliet detonated Jughead, the hydrogen bomb, he was transported back to 2007, his original time-line. Jacob the appeared to him and told him to take a dying Sayid to the Temple, and then to take Jack to the Lighthouse. It has been confirmed that Hurley is one of Jacob’s candidates by Jacob himself. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hugo_"Hurley"_Reyes
