The Hughes Mining Barge is a submersible barge owned by the U.S. Navy. The Sea Shadow, a stealth ship that is not detected by radar, is usually located inside the barge, so it is hidden from spy satellites. The Navy has been attempting to give away the two ships to museums since 2006, but museums are reluctant to accept the gift because of the problems and costs associated with maintaining the ships. The Wall Street Journal: The Navy Has a Top-Secret Vessel... Sea Shadow was the Navy's first experimental stealth ship. It escaped radar and sonar because of its special coatings and sharp angles. It is 160 feet long and 70 feet wide. It usually operated at night, when it was towed from inside the barge and launched onto the sea. It was used in experiments and war games. The existence of the ship became public in 1993, when the Navy started testing it at daytime. The Wall Street Journal: The Navy Has a Top-Secret Vessel... (February 23, 2009)
