Howard Unruh who murdered 13 people on
September 6,
1949 in
Camden,
New Jersey, died on
October 19,
2009. Unruh, an unemployed
World War II veteran, became paranoid about his neighbors, keeping a diary about them. He was apparently triggered when he arrived home from a movie theater to find that the gate he had just built in front of his house had been stolen. Unruh killed 13 people with 14 shots within 12 minutes, killing randomly. He returned to his home and engaged in a standoff, which led to a shootout, before he finally surrendered. Unruh was diagnosed with
paranoid schizophrenia and immune from prosecution. He was sent to the
New Jersey Hospital for the Insane (now
Trenton Psychiatric Hospital), where he remained until his death.
