Former U.S. Senator Howard Metzenbaum of Ohio served in Congress for almost 20 years.
Early Life
After earning a Juris Doctor from Ohio State, Metzenbaum worked as a lawyer before starting his political career in the Ohio House of Representatives in the 1940s.
Political Career
Although he never officially held a party leadership position, Metzenbaum's influence with fellow Senators earned him the nickname "Senator No." The name implied that without his support, a bill had no chance of passing. He was a strong advocate of consumer protection legislation, as well as antitrust laws.
