Step 1: Know How to Play Poker
- Before aiming to win at Poker, make sure you know how to play it.
- Winning in Poker means having the best hand, which is the best combination of cards according to a set rule of rankings for different combinations of cards.
- Poker is played in several rounds.
- The winner of each round wins the pot of bets for that round.
- Each round starts with betting. Players can chose to bet the same amount as the previous better, raise the bet, fold (dropping out), or, if no-one else has yet bet, check (passing the turn without folding).
- There are several variations of Poker. Make sure you are familiar with the exact rules of the version you are playing.
- Check out Mahalo's guide on How to Play Poker for more information.

Step 2: The Element of Acting
- Acting is an important aspect of Poker.
- If you are a good actor, bluffing is one strategy to win at poker. Bluffing means betting even though you don't have a good hand to fool others to believe you do, so that they will fold and you can win the bet.
- Bluffing is a risky way to attempt to win and will only work if no one else happens to have great cards on their hand.
- Study the behavior of other players for tips on if they are bluffing, and to learn about cues that might tip other people off that you are bluffing.

Step 4: Decisions
- What determines if you win at Poker, besides how good you and the other players are at acting and the element of luck, is ultimately the decisions to fold or bet. To best play Poker, you need to be familiar with basics of probability and mathematics to best calculate your chances of winning a round or getting the cards you need. Although probability can easily be calculated and risks evaluated, sometimes the unexpected happens. For those who enjoy gambling and are willing (and can afford) to take the risk, making an risky decision can sometimes result in big payoffs, but more often in the loss of money.
-
Step 5: State of Mind
- It's best to pay Poker when you're mind is clear and your mood neutral, as excessive emotions can lead to excessive risk taking. It's also wise to limit alcoholic drinks when playing, since alcohol tends to lower inhibitions and might make you bet when you otherwise would fold. You also need to have a clear mind to calculate odds and probability.

Conclusion
Poker is rarely just about luck, unless you and the other players are amateurs and pretty clueless about probability, acting and bluffing. While luck is an element of Poker, there are many skills you can develop to become a better Poker player, including your acting and mathematical skills.
