This was a single piece garment worn in Ancient Rome. It was considered to be dignified and simple to make. However wearing it correctly was complex. It is one of several historic single piece garments including the sari. The Toga was a cultural symbol of Ancient Rome just as the Kimono was a symbol of historic Japan. The Toga was made from wool and generally covered a light tunic. The Toga was a sign of formality as we can see from the anecdote about Cincinnatus and the Senators.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Toga
There were different grades of Toga from purple worn by the Roman Gods to white worn at maturity by young men in ancient Rome. The toga was worn by civilian citizens of Rome whereas the legions wore a more functional red cloak. In Rome the Toga became a symbol of citizenship and also of peaceful civilian life. Roman citizens having more civil rights than conquered peoples or slaves. The extra folds were seen as a sign of wealth. Women wore a two piece garment called a Stola. The Stola was two rectangular pieces of material fitted and fastened as dress.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stola The Toga came to be seen as scandalous dress for roman women. http://www.vroma.org/~bmcmanus/clothing.htm
In modern times the toga has found a new life as a drama and Cinema Film costume and as party and fun wear for fancy dress.http://www.howtomakeatoga.info/
Step 1: Choose Your Material
Choose your most suitable piece of material e.g at least several meters of material to allow scope for folds and drapes. Dimensions are suggested to be width of Toga equal to your height and length of Toga is your height by three.http://www.dimensionsguide.com/dimensions-of-a-toga
This makes sense as if you test with bedclothes e.g single sheet will be too small. Given a performance or drama costume budget buy a length significantly longer than a bed sheet. This will allow for folds and the drape effect of genuinely folded Toga.
Step 2: Wrapping the Toga
Next, remember to choose appropriate undergarments. The Romans wore a light tunic. Shorts for males or a white tube shirt for girls may be suitable. http://daymix.com/go/http://www.fibers.com/blog/how-to-make-a-toga Hold material positioned in place at right hip, now fold the top into belt fold, hold this in place as guide. Now wrap the material carefully once around waist then fix it in place, then wrap again into into kilt or skirt. Wrap several times until tight enough. If necessary a strong safety pin could be used as an aid. As an alternative more historically accurate but more daring drape over left side from shoulder then wrap around under right armpit and again if necessary. This needed the left arm to maintain position. http://www.vroma.org/~bmcmanu/clothing.html
Step 3: Final Touches
Then fold the surplus remaining cloth over the left shoulder. It may be tucked into wraparound for neatness. This will created folded and draped Toga. In ancient Rome the front overfold was called a sinus and the drape over it the umbo.http://www.vroma.org/~bmcmanus/clothing.html The Toga should not be confused with the ancient Greek dress called the Chiton.
Complete your outfit with sandals, which would be suitable footwear.
How to Wear a Toga
Friendly instructional video on wearing a Toga from Youtube. In this video Toga is held to waist folded into a belt then tied around the waist several times into a skirt or kilt. The remaining cloth is then draped over shoulder to complete the effect. This style seems more practical. Many of the Toga fashions on video are more freestyle and maybe not authentic to the ancient style. Here a double sheet was used this may be sufficient but is not ideal.
