Introduction
- You've seen the enthusiast laboring over his car on a Saturday, waxing and buffing, buffing and waxing....Why does he work so hard when he could just wash it, dry it, and forget it? The truth is, regular waxing not only makes your car look better, it also protects the car's surface and helps retard corrosion.
To do it yourself, here are the basic steps:
-
-
Step 1: Gather Your Materials
- Non-abrasive carnauba wax is widely considered to be best. Brand names abound, as do formulations.
- Liquid some find easier to use, as it is convenient to apply it directly to your car's surface.
- Paste is preferred by others because of its consistency.
- Car wax sponge
- Clean, soft towel. You can also use
- Microfiber cloth, or
- Chamois
Step 2: Wash and Dry Your Car
- Wax should not be applied until the car is thoroughly cleaned, dried, and cool to the touch.
Step 3: Apply Wax
- If it is a sunny day, move your car into a shady area. If it is a hot day, skip waxing.
- Using your sponge in a circular motion, apply the wax to a section of the car.
- Allow wax to haze, but do not allow it to dry completely.
- Avoid applying wax to any unglazed surfaces, such as the seals around the doors, or the trim around the windows. It can mar those surfaces.
- Always read the directions on the brand of wax you buy and follow any special manufacturer instructions.
Step 4: Remove Wax and Buff
- With your towel, wipe off the wax.
- Continue to buff the surface until it gleams. Be sure to regularly rotate the towel, so that you are working with a clean surface at all times.
- Remove wax from unglazed surfaces. You can try Windex or other window cleaner to get rid of every trace.
- Non-abrasive carnauba wax is widely considered to be best. Brand names abound, as do formulations.
