Introduction
- Although some newer windows have coatings that are resistant to dirt, in general, windows do not wash themselves. You can improve the appearance a room quickly, and lift your spirits as well, by cleaning the windows.
Step 2: Window Washing Tips
- Save money by making your own glass cleaner.
- Take an empty spray bottler and add 3 tablespoons ammonia, 1 tablespoon vinegar, 1/2 teaspoon of dish soap.
- Fill the bottle with water.
- Add a drop or two of blue food coloring if you'd like it resemble the commercial cleaners
- Shine windows using sheets of newspaper.
- To minimize streaks, clean windows on an average temperature, overcast day.
- Wipe outside windows dry in one direction and inside windows in the other. If you see a streak, you will know which side its on.
- Clean window sills at the same time you're cleaning windows by pouring diluted rubbing alcohol on a cloth and wiping the surface.Then dry the sill with a clean cloth.
Step 3: Upper Story Windows
- Cleaning the inside of upper story windows is simple; you use the same procedure as for any window. Cleaning upper story windows can be a challenge. Assuming you want to tackle them yourself, you have two choices:
- Use a ladder to reach the windows.
- Place your ladder in a position where you can carefully reach the window.
- Work on one window at a time.
- Hang your cleaning supplies in a bucket on the ladder.
- Keep your weight centered as you work.
- Use a commercial cleaners that are designed to be used with a garden hose to safely clean windows on the second story while you are on the ground. these do not clean as thoroughly as the you would when washing them by hand, you don't assume the risk of working from a ladder.
