Mahalo technology and social media expert Mike Bracco gives you an overview of Turntable.fm, one of the fastest growing music sites.
Main Menu
To get started, you must first get invited from a friend currently using Turntable.fm and log in via Facebook. The main screen lists the most popular rooms. First, you'll see the rooms your friends are currently in. Any Facebook friends currently on the site are listed to the right. Click on a room to join it.
Rooms
Every room allows up to five DJs at a time. After a song finishes playing, the next song up will be from the playlist of the next DJ in the row. You can tell who the DJ is by looking for an avatar with a halo. The people on the dance floor are other Turntable users listening to the music.
If you hover over the song name, you have the option to view the song in iTunes, Spotify or last.fm or add it to your queue.
Social Features
If you click Awesome, it gives a point to the DJ. If you click Lame, it doesn't take away any points, but if enough people don't like it, the song gets skipped. Points give the user the ability to change the avatar. The more points you have, the more credibility you have. A chat box is featured on the bottom of the screen, allowing you to connect with people while listening to music.
How to Find Songs
In the search box, you can look for essentially any song ever made and play it. But if the song's not featured on Turntable, you can upload your own music. If you click the Room Info drop-down menu, you can see who created the room, along with recently-played songs and their ratings.
