Step 1: Open or Create an Image
Open the Adobe Illustrator program from your desktop or programs folder, then select the "File" menu and "New" to make the "New Document" window appear. Name your new document and make your document options selections, then press the "OK" button. Step 2: Use the Magic Wand Tool
Press the second button from the top in your tool palate. The button resembles a magic wand. You can also activate this tool by selecting the "Y" button on your keyboard. Use this tool to automatically select the same gradient, or color, in an object for modification or deletion. Simply activate the tool, then click on the color you want to change in your image. All portions of your image with the same characteristics of the spot you click will automatically highlight. Step 3: Use the Lasso Tool
Click on the lasso tool which is the second button on the right-hand column on the tool palate, or press the "Q" key to activate. This tool is designed to select a portion of the image with more precision than the direct selection tool. Simply 'lasso' or draw around the object you want to select.
