How to Use The Hand Tool in Adobe Illustrator

Moving, zooming and adjusting images in Adobe Illustrator requires using the hand or zoom tools. These tools offer graphic designers the ability to magnify an area for detail work and customization. Step 1: Open Illustrator and an Image

Open Adobe Illustrator, then select the "File" menu and "New". The "New Document" window will appear. Name your new document in the "Name" box. Make document setting selections, then press the "OK" button. Step 2: Activate and Use the Hand Tool

Adobe Illustrator offers multiple ways to activate the hand tool. You can press on the glove icon located at the bottom of the left column on your tools palate or press "H" on your keyboard to fully activate the hand tool. If you only need the tool momentarily, you can press and hold the space bar on your keyboard and the hand tool will be activated until you release the bar.

Step 3: Use the Zoom Tool

Activate the zoom tool by pressing the magnifying glass icon at in the bottom, right-hand column of the tool bar, or click "Z" on your keyboard. Your cursor will change to a magnifying glass with a plus in the middle. Zoom in on an area by clicking your mouse button on the exact area where you desire magnification. Each click will continue to zoom-in more on your image. Press the "Option" button on an Apple-based system, or "Ctrl" on a Windows-based system to reverse the zoom direction.
