Step 1: Get Familiar
Before you start working with pictures, you should learn your way around the screen. Your toolbar is located along the left side, and is where you will find various brushes, the clone tool for covering imperfections, the magnifier and de-magnifier, the burn tool, and others.- The menu bar is located at the top of your screen, and has drop-down menus for options such as File, Edit, Image, Select, Filter, and View.
- On the bottom right is the layer palette, where you will be able to add and remove layers throughout the photo editing process.
Step 2: Access Photographs
Once you are somewhat familiar with the interface, it is time to open a photo to work on.- Transfer digital photos to your computer
- Scan hard copies of photos to your computer
- Save files as .jpeg, .gif or .psd
- Start Photoshop
- Go to File
- Go to Open
- Choose a file to open from your computer
Step 3: Adjust
There are many options in Photoshop, and the resources below will take you to detailed instructions. Here are some of the basics:- Crop: Go to the crop tool from your toolbar, and drag over the picture to select the area to crop. Then hit Enter, or select Crop from the Image menu.
- Resize:Go to Image in the menu bar, and choose Resize. You can change the photo size, canvas size, or pixels.
- Adjust Levels: To adjust lighting, contrast and color, go to Enhance, and choose to auto-correct, or adjust levels from the choices given.
