Gmail Text Preferences
When sending an email in Gmail, you can customize the appearance of your text by using the toolbar above the text box. Highlight a text section and select one of the toolbar options:
- "B" button: makes text bold
- "I" button: makes text italicized
- "U" button: underlines text
- "F" button: select the font
- "TT" button: changes the text size to Normal, Large or Huge
- "T Color" button: selects a color the for text
- "T Highlighter" button: selects a color to highlight the text
- Emoticon icon: selects an emoticon to insert into text box
- Link icon: makes the selected text hyperlink to the address you insert
- Numbers icon: adds numbered bullets to the text
- Bullets icon: adds bullet points to the text
- Indentation arrows: moves list bullets to the left or right
- Left, Right and Center alignment: changes the text's alignment to left, right or center
- Quotation icon: makes the selected text appear as a block quote
- "T" with red "X" button: removes the hyperlink from selected text
- "Plain Text" link: returns the text box to plain text settings
- "Check Spelling" link: checks the spelling of the highlighted text

Meet Our Expert

Ken O'Brien
Ken studied at Cal Arts with a double major in art and animation, and later worked in the video game industry as a level designer for companies like WayForward Games and Activision, where his credits include Jake Long the American Dragon and Enemy Territory: Quake Wars, among others. O’Brien is a longtime Apple guru, working as a personal instructor of Apple software and products after his career in video games. In 2010 O’Brien started his own art blog, LunchBagDad, which features hand-drawn and painted lunch bags he initially created for his daughters.
