Mahalo's cooking expert Scott Aaronson explains how to use a mandoline slicer.
Why Use a Mandoline?
- Mandolines are a great way to make large quantities of even slices.
- You can use it to slice many types of vegetables and fruit.
How Does It Work?
Place your mandoline on a cutting board and set up the stand at about a 60° or 45° angle. Some mandolines don't come with a stand, so you may need to hold it up with your free hand.
- Put your vegetable or fruit inside the guard slot. Most guards should have a post to attach the object that you're slicing. If your mandoline doesn't have a guard you'll have to hold the object with your hand.
Adjust the dial on the back of the mandoline to your preferred slice size. Dial it back to make thicker pieces and forward for thinner ones.
- If needed, change the blade to the type of cut you want. Your mandoline should have several different types and sizes.
- Place the guard with the vegetable at the top of the mandoline and slice it downwards with consistent pressure. Repeat this step until you have finished slicing the vegetable or fruit.
- Use your slices for your favorite recipe.
