If you have an older Mac computer, you might want to upgrade some of its software. This page is a guide on how to upgrade Mac System software.
-
Introduction
- If you have an older version of Mac, you might want to upgrade some of the computer's software to a newer edition for additional features and increased speed.
Step 1: Updating or Upgrading
- Software can easily be updated for free, but keep in mind that updating and upgrading are two different things. Upgrading a software means buying a new edition of it, such as Mac OS X 10.5. New editions have additional features and usually run quicker. Updating a software means updating an edition, such as MAC OS X 10.5, to a later version. You can update a software by choosing "software update" under the Apple menu on a Mac. The computer automatically searches for needed and available updates.
Step 2: Purchasing Software
- To upgrade Mac system software, you will need to purchase a new edition of the software. Depending on the software, you might be able to buy an upgrade version of it. This option enables you to buy a new edition specifically for existing users and will be cheaper than purchasing a regular version, but will offer the same features. For example, Adobe Photoshop offers significant savings if you upgrade a program instead of purchasing a new one. For other software, this option is not available and you will need to purchase a standard edition. Make sure the software is compatible with your operating system, as some new software will not work on older operating systems.
- You can purchase software directly from Mac.
- For savings, consider checking for sales at hardware stores such as Fry's or Comp USA.
- You can also buy software online from Amazon and other dealers, but avoid buying software from private sellers, as they can have viruses or other problems.
Step 3: Upgrading Software
- Once you have purchased software for your computer, you will need to install it. Installing software is usually easy
and the software will come with instructions.
- Before you upgrade, backup your hard disk.
- Insert the CD.
- Follow the instructions that came with the CD.
- Choose easy installation if you are not familiar with how to custom install the program and what features you will need.
- Choose Custom installation if you won't need all features of the software.
- Restart the computer.
