Like any other social networking tool, using Twitter takes some practice. If, after getting used to the service, you find that you no longer want to receive updates from some of the people you are following, this guide will teach you how to unfollow people on Twitter.
Getting used to using the service and customizing your Twitter profile takes some trial and error. Some new users, upon signing up, follow anyone whose profile they come across or follow anyone who follows them. Like many other social network tools, though, there are spammers on Twitter who follow all new users in an attempt to gain online notoriety or advertising revenue. If, after getting used to Twitter, you find that you have inadvertently subscribed to people who are spamming you, or simply those whose tweets you find uninteresting or redundant, you can customize your tweet stream by removing these users from your follow list.
Unfollowing people on Twitter is just as easy, if not even easier, than adding them to your follow list. Unlike when you sign up to follow someone, the person who you unfollow will not get an email telling them you have removed them from your follow list. This way, you don't need to worry about hurting anyone's feelings by unfollwing them. Therefore, you can sign up to follow as many people as you wish, and then opt to remove them from your stream later if you find their tweets annoying, boring, uninspired or offensive. The video and information below will provide you with all the steps needed to unfollow people on Twitter.
Video: How to Unfollow People on Twitter
The process for unfollowing a person on Twitter is relatively simple. This Mahalo video provides a visual reference for the process of unfollowing a person. Although the process is easy, the structure of the Twitter page does make it as intuitive as many users would like. This fact is mentioned in the video as well. The fact that a user can be followed and unfollowed multiple times is likewise mentioned.
Step 1: Sign into Twitter
Before making any adjustments to your Twitter profile or following list, you'll have to first sign in. The process of unfollowing someone on Twitter will not work unless you are logged in to the site.
To log in, go to the Twitter homepage (www.twitter.com) and click on the Sign In link. Alternatively, you can simply go directly to the log in page (www.twitter.com/login). Next, enter your user name and password in the appropriate fields and then click "Sign In" or press your enter key. Once you are in the system, you are ready to continue to step two.
Step 2: Unfollowing Through a Twitter Profile
If you are interested in only unfollowing a single person, it may be easiest to do it from their Twitter page itself. If you see the specific person in your feed, click on their name. If they don't appear on your home page, you can click on your "Following" list and find their profile from there.
Once you are on the person's page, all you need to do is unfollow them. Click on the gear icon to the very right underneath their name and scroll down to "Unfollow." When you click on this, you should be all set. If everything worked out, a button should appear on the top left under the person's name that says "Follow," instead of the "Following" with a green check mark that was there before.
Step 3: Unfollowing Through Your Following List
You can also unfollow people in a more speedy fashion by going to the list of people you are following. To do this, click on the "following" link on your home page. You can find this link near the top right hand corner of the page, directly beneath your user name and profile picture.
Scroll through the list until you find the account or accounts you want to stop following. Once you have found a profile that you want to remove from your follow list, click the gear button on the right side of the listing and scroll down to find "Unfollow."
If you unfollow someone by accident, simply click on the "follow" button that will appear under their picture after you remove them. To ensure that your changes have been applied, click on your web browser's "refresh" button. The account which you removed should no longer be listed in your "following" list. Repeat this step to remove as many people as you want from your list.
