Would you like to learn how to tune a snare drum? Whether you plan to become a rock star or just want to release your extra energy on some drum beats, this page can help you get ready behind the drum set. Like timing, tuning is one of the essential skills a drummer must have.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Tuge0TEE4xI Drumming is not all about beating percussive instruments, it's also about tuning them appropriately for the music they accompany. Although the snare drum is the smallest drum in the common drum set, it is the biggest drum in terms of standing out in commonly heard songs. The snare drum is the loudest drum and sometimes the brightest drum.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Tuge0TEE4xI On top of that, it is the most versatile drum.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3Xywu8RURlY But as you would expect, tuning a drum is far simpler than tuning a piano. This page will show you how easy it is to tune the small and not terrible snare drum.
Tuning a Snare Drum
A part of Mahalo.com's "How to Play Drums" Youtube course, this video shows the correct way to tune a snare drum. It covers the "tuning" of the snare and the two heads of the snare drum.
Step 1: Tune the Bottom Head
It is recommended that you tune the snare-side, or bottom, head first. That's because it is the thinner and the more sensitive head of the snare drum.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Tuge0TEE4xI After putting the head on the bottom rim of the shell, work on the lugs as you would on the nuts of a car tire hub when installing a tire. The goal is to install the head in a balanced manner, so you do not fully tighten the lugs one at a time. Instead, you hop around the rim in a star pattern, little by little, until the head is fastened perfectly to the shell.
Step 2: Tune the Top Head
Apply step 1 to the top head. If the rim were a clock, you would hop from 12 to 6 to 3 to 9 and so on. You gradually tighten the lugs until the head is tightly installed to the rim and perpendicular to the height of the cylindrical shell. You may use your eyes to check for any imbalances and correct them.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Tuge0TEE4xI
Step 3: Tune the Snare
Go back to the bottom head in order to tune the "soul" of the snare drum. Each kind or brand of snare drum will have its own control or adjusting mechanism for its snare. The correct "tuning" for the snare depends on the song you wish to play. If you are trying to learn the drum accompaniment to a recorded song, work with a recording of the song to tune your snare.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Tuge0TEE4xI If you are playing in a band, ask your bandmates to lend your snare drum their ears. They can help you tune the snare of your snare drum properly. Some songs require the snare to be tightened, and some somes require the snare to be loosened.
