Read the steps below to learn how to treat eczema.

Disclaimer: It is always best, of course, to visit the doctor if you think you have eczema.

Step 1: Bathe to Revive Moisture

Take a nice warm shower or bath. It is best for your skin if you bathe daily. It rinses away any irritants and it revives skin moisture. It is best to use fragrance free soaps and body wash because the ones that contain fragrances are usually irritating to sensitive skin. You can use oatmeal powder if you are taking a bath. You can buy the Aveeno brand or the store brand oatmeal powder packets and you dissolve them in your bath water. This really helps soothe and moisturize dry skin. It helps with itching too. When using the powder in the bath water, you don't need to use soap with it because it has it's own cleansing action already built in. Be sure to keep your bath water at a comfortable temperature. Water that is too hot can make eczema breakouts worse. When you are done bathing, pat your skin dry gently with a clean towel.

Step 2: Moisturize

Apply moisturizer all over your body. This is important because any eczema that you have will be moisturized to help it heal and if your skin is free of eczema at the moment, the moisturizer will help to prevent future breakouts. Just like the soaps and body wash, you should choose a moisturizer that does not contain fragrance. There are quite a few choices of moisturizers to choose from. The ones that are thicker creams work much better than thin watery lotions. They seem to moisturize a lot more and are less irritating to the skin. You can choose from brands like Aveeno, Cetaphil, Eucerin, Vaseline and more. The ones that come in a jar or tub are much better than the ones that you can pump. The ones you can pump are most likely going to be too watery. It helps to moisturize twice a day when your skin is really irritated.

Step 3: Apply Topical Creams or Ointments

Apply any medication that has been prescribed by your doctor to the affected areas. If you haven't seen a doctor yet for your eczema, you can apply a very thin layer of hydrocortisone cream just on the eczema patches. You can purchase this cream over the counter at your local pharmacy or supermarket. Be sure to follow the directions for how many times a day you can apply it. This cream usually helps clear up flare ups in a week or two. It is very important that you do not apply this type of cream to the face though, as it may cause scarring because facial tissue is more delicate. If you have eczema on the face you should definitely ask a doctor for a prescription that is safe to use on the face, such as Elidel for an example. If you are waiting to see a doctor, you can always apply a thin layer of Aquaphor or Vaseline on facial eczema. It does help, though the prescriptions are always more effective.
