• A corn is a dense, conical mass of compacted skin that protrudes from the foot. Corns resemble small kernels, which is why they are named what they are. They usually pop up around the toe area. They are not painful at first, but can start to hurt if left untreated. Corns do not start out inherently dangerous -- in fact, the body creates them to protect you from pressure. However, they can eventually develop into ulcers that may spread and become infected. Thus, if you discover one it is important to treat it right away.

• All corns develop because of excess pressure on the foot. Therefore, the first step to take is to remove whatever is pressing against your poor tootsies. Check your shoes, are they are the most likely culprits. You need to get rid of any footwear that presses against your skin and causes friction. Once the offending shoes have been discarded, your corn may go away on its own. If not, further action will be required.

• Once you have removed the source of pressure, you may begin to try to remove the corn. To remove it at home, take the following steps:

1. Wash feet thoroughly.
2. Soak in warm water to soften skin, using a foot soak or bath salts if desired.
3. Use a pumice to slough away rough skin.
4. Dry well.
5. Apply a corn pad.

• It is important to remember that if you do not protect your feet from pressure, the corn will keep coming back. Be sure to wear shoes that do not pinch or rub against your skin.

• If your corn is excessively painful or seems like it may be infected, it is a good idea to head for the podiatrist's office. Your doctor will be able to tell you if you need professional treatment. Sometimes corns are caused by bony protrusions, in which case you may need the help of surgery. Sometimes collagen injections are also used to treat chronic corns. Your podiatrist will be able to pinpoint exactly what is causing your corns, and direct you towards the best course of treatment.
