Want potty train your canine, stop begging, or teach her/him to do tricks? You and your pet will both be happier if you take the time to learn how to train a dog.
Introduction
Training your dog will not only make your life easier, but it will help your pet live a happier and more fulfilled life. Dogs want to be disciplined and taught their role in the house. This does not mean that they should be yelled at, hit or disrespected. Proper training will make your dog feel that they are contributing to the family, and have a distinct place in your household.
Step 1: Learn to Understand your Dog
Dogs may not use words, but they are very communicative. They will show you through body language what they are feeling. It is important to learn the nonverbal cues that your animal gives you, as this will help you know what is going on in her/his mind during the training process.
Step 2: Train
Training should begin immediately--there is no need to wait until a certain age. The vast majority of training should be through positive reinforcement. Show your dog what you want them to do, and then offer a reward, such as a treat or toy, when they do it. Oftentimes, simply praising your dog is sufficient. They will do what they are supposed to do because they long for your acceptance. Positive reinforcement is the fastest, easiest, and kindest way to train.
- Of course, there will be times when you need to correct bad behavior. Refrain from hitting, as it does not work and will only make your dog miserable. Scold the dog sharply immediately after the deed, so that they know what they are being scolded for.http://animals.howstuffworks.com/pets/how-to-train-a-dog
Step 3: Tricks
To teach your dog tricks, you will need to show them what you want them to do while speaking the command to them. For example, say "down" firmly, while crouching down and gently pushing your dog into the down position. Don't muddle the command with any other words, as this will only confuse them. Once they have laid down, offer a treat. Once basics like "down" and "shake" have been learned, you may move on to more complicated tricks.
