Introduction
- The Kentucky Derby is first leg of the triple crown of thoroughbred racing. There are many traditions associated with the Derby; you'll want to incorporate as many as possible into your Derby party.
Step 1: Make Sure You Have a the Right TV
- The focal point of your party will be watching the race. Although its brief, you'll want your guests to be able to join in the fun. If you don't have a large screen TV, you may want to rent one for the day.
Step 2: Plan Your Kentucky Derby Party Menu
- Aim for a southern atmosphere with the food and drink. Here are a few ideas:
- Beverages: Mint juleps, Southern Comfort punch, lemonade and sweet iced tea
- Appetizers: Crackers with shrimp butter, black-eyed-pea salsa, pimento cheese dip, benedictine stuffed cherry tomatoes
- Entrees: Grits-and-sausage soufflé Cajun shrimp, Kentucky ham, bison glazed with bourbon , barbeque

Step 3: Select Derby Activities
- Integrating a few Kentucky Derby or racing themed activities will guarantee your guests have a good time.
- Print up race cards, and hand out play money, so the guests can bet on the races.
- Extravagant hats are a Derby tradition. Let guests know they are expected to wear a hat, and give prizes in several categories.
