How to Tent Camp

Although some people may balk at the idea of sleeping outside with only a piece of material separating them from the elements, many tent camping enthusiasts can think of no better way to spend their vacations. If you're new to the activity and want to learn how to tent camp, this guide will provide you with the information you need.

Introduction

  • People from all walks of life and places around the world enjoy tent camping. Sleeping outdoors in a tent not only allows you to enjoy the sights and sounds of the wilderness, but is also a more economical way to spend your vacation than paying hundreds of dollars a night on hotel rooms.

Step 1: Get a Tent

  • Naturally, if you're heading out for a tent camping excursion, you'll need to get yourself a tent if you don't already have one. There are virtually thousands of different tents that you can buy and they range in price from about one hundred to several thousand dollars. You can purchase tents at most department, outdoor supply and sporting goods stores. If you've never bought a tent before, it's a good idea to do some research beforehand and ask one of the sales associates to help you select the tent that's right for you and your camping companions.
  • Some things you'll want to consider when purchasing a tent include:
  1. How many people will be sleeping in the tent? Although you may be tempted to get the largest tent you can afford, keep in mind that a large tent with only a few people in it will be colder than a smaller tent with the recommended number of campers sleeping in it
  2. Does the tent come with a rain flap or fly? In most cases, it's best to get a tent with one, even if you are not expecting rain
  3. What weather conditions is the tent rated for? You want to make sure that the tent will keep you warm at night
  4. How heavy is the tent? If you plan to camp at a spot you'll have to hike your gear out to, ensure that it is light enough that you can carry it comfortably

Step 2: Other Supplies

  • In addition to your tent, you may need to purchase related camping equipment, including:
  1. A tarp to place under the tent in case of wet conditions
  2. Sleeping bags
  3. A cooler to keep your perishable food items from spoiling
  4. Flashlights and lanterns
  5. An air mattress or sleeping pad to place under your sleeping bags for a more comfortable night's sleep
  6. A camping stove
  7. Utensils, pots and pans and other cooking supplies
  • For more detailed information on what you'll need and how to pack for your camping trip, see Mahalo's guide on How to Camp.

Step 3: Practice Setting Up

  • Once you have bought your tent and gotten it home, practice setting it up at least once. Not only will this familiarize you with the set-up process, but it will also alert you as to whether any tent poles, pegs, or other necessary equipment is missing from your tent bag. You will also get an idea what kind of tools you will need to set up your tent.

  • For more detailed instructions on setting up a tent, refer to Mahalo's guide on How to Pitch a Tent.

Step 4: Find a Spot

  • Regardless of whether you've secured a camp site or plan to pitch your tent on the beach or in a field, there are several qualities you should look for in a good tenting spot. Find an area that is:
  1. Flat and level
  2. Dry
  3. Not directly below a large hill, as you could get soaked if it rains
  4. Relatively clear of large rocks, logs and other debris
  5. Partially shaded. Especially if you are camping in summer, you'll find that your tent can get unbearably hot if it's in the full sun for even an hour or two
  6. At least ten feet away from your campfire
  • Plan to arrive at your destination before dark. You'll find that setting up your tent is much easier when you have light.

Conclusion

  • When planning to go tent camping, ensure that you first get a tent that is suitable for your plans. Always try setting up a new tent at home before heading out on your trip to ensure that you know how to do so and pack all the tools you will require. Be sure to arrive at your destination well before dark so that you can select an appropriate tenting area and have plenty of time to set up your tent before it gets dark.
