Step 1: Obtain a Passport
You will need a U.S. Passport in order to travel over to Japan. It's important to get this as early as possible, because as you start searching for job opportunities you may be required to start on a moment's notice. A passport will generally take 4-6 weeks to receive, however rush service is available to get the passport in two weeks. The passport costs right around 100 dollars with all of the fees. You will need to bring 2 photos, a birth certificate, and a proof of identity such as a Driver's License. -

Step 2: Get a Working Visa
The only way to legally teach English in Japan is to obtain a working visa. You must have a university degree (not necessarily in teaching). There are no exceptions to this rule. There are several forms to fill out and you have to provide your original college degree as proof. It generally take 2-3 months for the process to complete, and the visa issued is usually for a duration of 1-3 years. -
Step 3: Search Online For a Job
You don't actually have to fly over to Japan in order to job hunt. There are many job classifieds sites to search for opportunities online. In addition, there are many agencies who will assist you with your plans to travel to Japan and obtain a teaching career. Do your online research first and find a good reputable site to search for jobs on. -

Step 4: Get a Certificate of Eligibility
After a company has made the decision to hire you, they will send you a Certificate of Eligibility. Once you have this, you need to take it to a consulate to have your visa added to this. -
