Tips
Get a great blunt cut
Don't brush your hair straight after you've dried it
Try out smoothing and humidity beating products until you find the right one
Introduction
Wavy or curly hair tends to be more frizzy than straight hair due to the shape of the hair follicles. The two other main factors which contribute to frizz are the condition of your hair and the environment. Whilst you can't do anything to change the basic genetic structure of your hair, the right care, treatment and styling products can help you keep frizz under control.
Celebrity hair stylist Kevin Moshier, owner of Plush Salon in Beverly Hills, demonstrates how to tame frizzy hair. He give tips on how to wash your hair, the best way to distribute product, and then demonstrates and teaches his real life model how to perform the perfect blow dry, to transform frizz into super sleek.
Step 1: The First Cut is the Deepest
A good cut is the basis for taming frizz. Keep haircuts as one length as possible as weight will hold the hair down. Layers must always be cut heavy and blunt, and never razored or slice cut. Curlisto Salon in New York City, which specializes in wavy and curly hair, suggests that layers should only ever be cut at a 68° angle for definition and movement. Get regular trims to keep split ends at bay, and to stop the hair splitting further up the shaft.
Step 2: Moisturise, Moisturise, Moisturise
Frizzy hair is often quite dry so make sure you use a shampoo and conditioner with moisturizing or glossing qualities. Look for ingredients such as coconut oil or camelina seed oil, as unrefined oils are able to penetrate the hair shaft and help retain moisture.
Use a deep conditioning or glossing treatment once a week, or as often as it suits, to keep the hair shaft sleek.
Step 3: Brush Off
Brushing frizzy hair often makes it much worse due to the static it causes. The best way to manage your hair is to comb it whilst you still have conditioner in. Use your fingers to get knots out, followed by a wide tooth comb. Hair is easier to detangle whilst conditioner is still in, and this will prevent further tears.
Leave hair to dry naturally wherever possible as endless blow drying will only dry the hair out further over time, adding to the big frizz. Always use heat protecting products when blow drying to keep moisture in and damage out.
Step 4: Style and Go
There are two ways you can go when it comes to styling frizzy hair: enhance the curl or wave, or straighten it down. Leaving hair to dry naturally with curl enhancing sprays will give you soft waves rather than full on frizz. Do not brush it when dry, use your fingers to run through any tangles.
For straight, smooth hair, use straightening irons or blow dry with straightening balm and a paddle or round brush. But again to prevent further drying out and frizz, keep the straightening to a minimum and always use heat protection products.
Finish off either look with a serum or shine product for a sleek finish. There are many styling ranges and products specifically designed for frizzy hair, but as the genetic make-up and texture of everyone's hair is different it really is a case of trial and error until you find the best products for you. Many ranges sell trial sizes in larger pharmacies.
Humidity is the worst enemy of the frizz, as moisture penetrating the hair shaft changes it's bond. Look for finishing sprays which contain humidity protectors or weather barriers to keep the flyaways away once you've left the house.
Step 5: Fashion is on Your Side This Fall
Following on from the Christian Dior show, big frizzy hair is a major trend for Fall Winter 2009. The New York Times recently even featured a article and video demonstrating how to frizz your hair. So for once you can frizz out and hang loose, and be the height of fashion for doing so. The frizzier the better.
