You want your senior picture to say something about you, to represent who you are at the final, epitomizing moment of your teenage years. This guide will help get you started by providing tips on how to take a senior photo.

Introduction
- Have you finally reached the apex of your youth, that pivotal moment in every teenager's life when the end of high school is finally within reach? If so, congratulations on making it to your senior year. Now that you've arrived though, there is still a loose end to tie up in addition to graduating, attending your prom, and planning a senior prank and senior skip day: senior photos. Everyone wants to look their best in their final school photo, and why not? It is the end of an era and should be represented accordingly. This guide will provide you with the necessary information on how to take a senior photo.
Step 1: Decide on a Photographer
- First you need to choose a photographer to capture your final moment in the spotlight. There will be many options available to you, especially if you live in a larger city, so you should perform some preliminary research before making your final decision. You should:
- Get some suggestions from people you know that have previously hired photographers for senior photos
- Check the internet for local photographers and look at the photos posted on their website
- Ask teachers or administrators at your high school for suggestions
Step 2: Set Up a Consultation
- Consultations with the photographer are important, so when you initially call make sure they are willing to meet with you ahead of time. If they are not, you might want to consider going elsewhere. The benefits of a consultation are:
- You will have the opportunity to discuss what you want out of your senior photo. If you are going for an outdoorsy feel, then you can decided on an ideal place outdoors to take your photos.
- The photographer can also offer you tips on what colors or clothing patterns to avoid on the big day. If you plan on shooting outside, for example, there may be a different dress code than if you were to shoot indoors.
- Establishing a comfort level. Some people are shy about having their photo taken, especially by a stranger, so it is important to have already met the photographer to take away some of the jitters you may have.
- You will be able to ask important questions, such as whether or not the photographer will perform touch-ups on the photos if required, and if so whether or not there will be additional costs
Step 3: Preparation
- Once you have discussed some specifics with the photographer, you can begin preparations for the big day, including:
- Deciding how to wear your hair
- Selecting several clothing options. You can wear one and bring several others with you, changing throughout the photo session to give you a variety, or simply bringing them as backup in case your first choice does not end up looking good on film.
- Make an appointment to have your hair done if necessary
- Purchase any additional accessories you may want to wear when the big day arrives
Step 4: DIY Backup
- In case you are not satisfied with the photos provided by the photographer, you can always take your own senior photos. If you have access to a decent digital camera, you are all set. Choose an appropriate location and bring a friend or family member along that is skilled behind the lens. Have them improvise. Although doing it this way is not the preferred method, it is a good backup plan in case the professional photos are a flop.
