How to Take Paxil

Paxil is a SSRI (selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor) used to treat depression, panic attacks, anxiety disorders, obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and a severe form of premenstrual syndrome called premenstrual dysphoric disorder. SSRIs help to restore the balance of neurotransmitters like serotonin in the brain. It may improve mood, sleep, appetite, and energy levels, and restore an interest in daily living. It may decrease anxiety, unreasonable fears, persistent obsessions and compulsions, and decrease the number and intensity of panic attacks. It may also help with symptoms of premenstrual symptoms like irritability, increased appetite and depression.http://www.rxlist.com/paxil-drug.htm

Paxil Warning

Antidepressant medications are used to treat a variety of conditions, including depression and other mental/mood disorders. These medications can help prevent suicidal thoughts/attempts and provide other important benefits. However, studies have shown that a small number of people (especially people younger than 25) who take antidepressants for any condition may experience worsening depression, other mental/mood symptoms, or suicidal thoughts/attempts. Therefore, it is very important to talk with the doctor about the risks and benefits of antidepressant medication (especially for people younger than 25), even if treatment is not for a mental/mood condition.http://www.rxlist.com/paxil-drug.htm

Tell the doctor immediately if you notice worsening depression/other psychiatric conditions, unusual behavior changes (including possible suicidal thoughts/attempts), or other mental/mood changes (including new/worsening anxiety, panic attacks, trouble sleeping, irritability, hostile/angry feelings, impulsive actions, severe restlessness, very rapid speech). Be especially watchful for these symptoms when a new antidepressant is started or when the dose is changed.http://www.rxlist.com/paxil-drug.htm

Have your family or caregivers watch for signs of changing moods or symptoms. You will need to be checked by your doctor regularly for the first twelve weeks of treatment.

Paxil can cause heart defects or life-threatening lung problems in newborns whose mothers are taking Paxil during pregnancy. Cessation of medication during pregnancy can cause a relapse of depression so if you are planning on getting pregnant talk to your doctor about stopping the medication. Breastfeeding during pregnancy can be harmful to the baby. Do not breastfeed while taking this medication.http://www.rxlist.com/paxil-drug.htm
