Lexapro (escitalopram oxalate) is a Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitor (SSRI) that is used to treat major depressive disorder (MDD) in adults and adolescents (aged 12-17) and for the treatment of generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) in adults. The brain chemistry in depression and anxiety is not completely understood. It is believed that the chemical messengers (neurotransmitters) allow communications between the nerve cells which regulate some aspects of behavior and mood. These neurotransmitters are thought to play an important role in the development of depression and anxiety. The neurotransmitter serotonin has been linked to most, perhaps all, forms of depression. SSRIs are thought to work by blocking the reabsorption (reuptake) of serotonin in the brain, thus increasing available serotonin.http://www.lexapro.com/about-lexapro/ Lexapro may improve feelings of well-being, increase energy level and reduce nervousness.http://www.webmd.com/drugs/drug-63990-Lexapro+Oral.aspx?drugid=63990&drugname=Lexapro+Oral
Lexapro Warnings
Antidepressant medications are used to treat a variety of conditions, including depression and other mental/mood disorders. These medications can help prevent suicidal thoughts/attempts and provide other important benefits. However, studies have shown that a small number of people (especially people younger than 25) who take antidepressants for any condition may experience worsening depression, other mental/mood symptoms, or suicidal thoughts/attempts. Therefore, it is very important to talk with the doctor about the risks and benefits of antidepressant medication (especially for people younger than 25), even if treatment is not for a mental/mood condition.
Tell the doctor immediately if you notice worsening depression/other psychiatric conditions, unusual behavior changes (including possible suicidal thoughts/attempts), or other mental/mood changes (including new/worsening anxiety, panic attacks, trouble sleeping, irritability, hostile/angry feelings, impulsive actions, severe restlessness, very rapid speech). Be especially watchful for these symptoms when a new antidepressant is started or when the dose is changed.http://www.webmd.com/drugs/drug-63990-Lexapro+Oral.aspx?drugid=63990&drugname=Lexapro+Oral
