Introduction
- Since 9-11, many Americans' awareness about the potential threat of attacks on U.S. soil has been heightened. This awareness was once again brought into focus in late 2008, when a report compiled by the Senate Commission on the Prevention of WMD Proliferation and Terrorism warned that a terrorist attack, most likely involving biological weapons, was likely to occur on U.S. soil by the year 2013. If such an attack does occur, being prepared for the worst may increase the chances that you and your family survive.
Step 1: Prevention
- There are measures you can take to help safeguard yourself against the incapacitating and sometimes fatal biological agents released during a biological attack.
- Talk to your doctor about the vaccines available against viruses, bacteria and toxins such as anthrax and smallpox
- Install a HEPA air filtration system in your house. These devices may help prevent biological agents from getting into your home
- Get some surgical masks for yourself and members of your family
- Mahalo's guide on the subject provides more detailed information on how to prepare for a biological attack
Step 2: In the Event of an Attack
- If you hear about a biological attack on the news, use common sense and practice heightened awareness regarding what's going on around you. Keep a television or radio tuned to a major new network to keep abreast of official instructions regarding the attack. If there has been a confirmed attack:
- Stay out of public places and avoid coming into contact with people who may be infected
- Speak to a medical professional about possible antibiotics to fight or prevent infection
- Keep your windows closed
- Wash your hands frequently and thoroughly
- If you or a family member becomes ill, speak to a medical professional immediately for instructions regarding quarantine and treatment
Step 3: Exposure
- If you suspect that you have been exposed to a potentially harmful biological agent, take the following steps:
- Move away from the area or item you suspect is contaminated
- Wash any exposed skin with soap and water
- Don a face mask if one is available, but do not cover your face with your hands or clothing if you suspect they may have been contaminated
- Cover any open wounds with a sterile bandage or gauze
- Avoid touching potentially contaminated surfaces
- Remove any clothes that may have come into contact with the biological agent and place them in a plastic bag
- Contact the authorities immediately for further instructions
Conclusion
- Arguably the most important thing to do in the case of a suspected or confirmed biological attack is to remain calm and use common sense. Although it may be difficult, try not to panic, avoid coming into contact with potentially infected people or areas and wait for further instructions from authorities.
