For those of us that really do enjoy eating crabs of all types, not everyone is comfortable with steaming the crabs themselves, but would love to learn some easy tricks and tips to make your next crab steampot party a big success. Read on through this page to learn how to steam crabs.
The simple and basic, but delicious way to steam crabs is to grab a large stock pot, put it on the stove and place a steaming rack inside the pot. Next you will want to add water and vinegar to just below the steaming rack. Next add your crabs one layer at a time, and add a solid coating of Old Bay Seasoning across each layer of crab. Do not overfill the pot. Add salt over the crabs. Cook and steam the crabs until they turn orange, which will take about 20 to 30 minutes depending upon your heat setting and the number of crabs in the steampot. This is the traditional approach for steaming Maryland style blue crabs. Now you can certainly substitute blue crab for other types, such as snow crab legs or king crab.
