How to Shovel Snow Safely
This video from HowCast explains the best ways to shovel snow and reviews some of the considerations that should be taken while shoveling.
Step 1: Use the Right Tools
- Visit a local hardware or department store that carries a variety of snow shovels.
- Remove each one from the shelf and hold it as if you were shoveling snow. Ensure that when the blade of the shovel rests on the ground that your hands in a comfortable location and that your arms are extended and level with the ground.
- Select a small shovel rather than a large shovel.
- Push shovels are large and require that you use your weight to push the snow away. These work very well for regular, dry snowfalls. For wet, heavy snow, a small shovel is still the best option.
Step 2: Shovel Properly
- Take small loads. While it may feel like lifting large loads will get the job done faster, you will become tired quickly and will require more rest.
- Lift with your legs. If you feel your back tighten up as you are lifting snow, you are not shoveling correctly. Place more wight on your legs and use them to push the shovel of snow up.
- Don't throw the snow. The less distance that you need to move the snow, the less work you will need to do to clear it.
Step 3: Reset, Relax, Shovel
- Take fast, restful breaks while shoveling. If you have other outdoor tasks to complete in addition to shoveling snow (such as clearing car windows, sweeping a porch, etc) use these tasks as breaks to maximize your time and give your muscles a chance to rest.
- If you feel at all dizzy, cold, or otherwise unwell, stop. The snow isn't going anywhere and you can continue after you feel better. Warm up inside and return to the job later.
- After you're complete, a warm bath will help queue muscles. The warmth will relax them and generally make you feel better.
