How to Shave Mutton Chops

If you are searching for a new style of facial hair that is sure to make your mug stand out, mutton chops may be just what you're after. A classic look that still holds its own in the modern fashion world, this sideburn style rarely fails to draw attention to the face. If this sounds appealing to you, read on to learn how to shave mutton chops.

Introduction

  • Mutton chops are a popular sideburn style that can be worn alone, or in combination with a variety of beards and mustaches. Mutton chops are sometimes associated with the rockabilly music genre, so growing a pair will give you a retro look. They tend to stand out on the wearer, so if you wish to make a statement with your facial hair design, mutton chops may be for you.

Step 1: Choose Your Style

  • There are actually two versions of mutton chop: regular mutton chops, and "friendly" mutton chops. Regular mutton chops are shaped independently of the beard or mustache. The friendly variety of chops are connected to the mustache, creating a continuous line of hair across the face. The friendly mutton chop style was actually sported by Ambrose Burnside, a Civil War general after whom sideburns were originally named.

Step 2: Grow Your Hair

  • Before you can begin to style your sideburns, you need to grow them out. Wait at least a week or so. Full, thick hair growth is the key to good mutton chops. If you are opting for the friendly mutton chop look, you will also need to grow your mustache out at the same time, along with the top portion of your beard. It may be easiest to let all of the hair grow, so that you do not accidentally take off a portion of what would have been your chop.

Step 3: Shave

  • It is best to use a regular manual razor, as you will have more control and precision than with an electric one. Shave according to the style you are after.

Shaving Regular Mutton Chops

  1. Decide how long you want your chops

  2. Shave a clean line at the bottom of the sideburn

  3. Starting at the top of the ear (on the cheek side), shave away excess hair, creating the shape you desire.

  4. Leave chops wider at the bottom, in a sort of bell-bottom effect

Shaving Friendly Mutton Chops

  1. Shave the chin area between the corners of your lips

  2. Shape areas above and below the line where your mustache meets your sideburns to create desired shape

  3. Carefully trim the sideburns and mustache so that the hair is all one length

Conclusion

  • Growing mutton chops will give you a unique, retro look. Try experimenting with different hair lengths and shape variations. Mutton chops will require a bit of maintenance, but they can make your overall appearance more interesting and make you stand out in a crowd.
