Introduction
- Mutton chops are a popular sideburn style that can be worn alone, or in combination with a variety of beards and mustaches. Mutton chops are sometimes associated with the rockabilly music genre, so growing a pair will give you a retro look. They tend to stand out on the wearer, so if you wish to make a statement with your facial hair design, mutton chops may be for you.

Step 1: Choose Your Style
(Creative Commons photo by Zabowski)- There are actually two versions of mutton chop: regular mutton chops, and "friendly" mutton chops. Regular mutton chops are shaped independently of the beard or mustache. The friendly variety of chops are connected to the mustache, creating a continuous line of hair across the face. The friendly mutton chop style was actually sported by Ambrose Burnside, a Civil War general after whom sideburns were originally named.

Step 2: Grow Your Hair
- Before you can begin to style your sideburns, you need to grow them out. Wait at least a week or so. Full, thick hair growth is the key to good mutton chops. If you are opting for the friendly mutton chop look, you will also need to grow your mustache out at the same time, along with the top portion of your beard. It may be easiest to let all of the hair grow, so that you do not accidentally take off a portion of what would have been your chop.
